Shaw's disastrous 2024 has got even worse with United confirming that the left-back will miss the opening games of the Premier League campaign with a calf problem. The 29-year-old sustained his latest injury at the start of pre-season training, and he's not expected to return until after the first international break.

Shaw suffered a hamstring injury in February that forced him to miss the remainder of United's season, including the FA Cup final victory. Gareth Southgate included him in his England squad for the European Championship but he wasn't ready until the quarter-final and managed just 177 minutes in Germany. Another setback to start the new campaign is the last thing Shaw wanted.

United boss Erik ten Hag could turn to 17-year-old Harry Amass as Shaw's replacement. The teenager was a standout during the Red Devils' pre-season tour of the United States, starting all three friendlies, and was praised for making "big steps" by his manager during the tour.
